Frequently Asked Questions

What is Flash Flash Revolution?
Flash Flash Revolution (or FFR) is a music game. You begin by picking a song. Each song has a corresponding pattern of arrows that goes along to the beat of the music. Your goal is to hit the correct arrows as close as possible to the music.

If you've ever played a game like Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, Beatmania, or In The Groove, you should feel right at home here.

Do I need to register?
You probably want to. You don't have to, but logged-in users get access to a bunch of neat features. The game saves your high scores on every song and lets you unlock bonus songs if you're logged in. Also, the multiplayer features are only available to logged-in users.

Registration is free, and we will never sell or give away your email address to anyone for any reason, so you've got nothing to lose.

Does this cost money?
Nope, the game is and always will be 100% free.

How do I get started?
Click the button labeled "The Game" at the top of the screen to get started. After the game loads, you will see the Main Menu.

First, pick a song. The big wheel on the right side of the screen is the genre selector. Click the left and right arrows to highlight different genres of music, and then click the highlighted genre icon when you've found a genre you want to play. Note that since you're a new player, there aren't going to be any songs in Purchased or Secret yet.

When you open a genre, a grid of twelve squares appears at the left side of the screen. You can scroll up and down by clicking the arrows to the right of this grid. Click the name of a song for more information (this appears at the bottom-right of the screen.) When you're happy with the song, click it again. As soon as it finishes loading, it will start - so be ready!

How do I play the game?
At the top of the screen are four arrows that don't move: left, down, up, right. These are the "targets."

When an arrow that's moving up the screen meets a target, press the corresponding arrow key on your keyboard. Listen to the music! The moment that they meet corresponds to the beat of the song.

Try to hit the arrow at the exact moment it overlaps the target. The closer you are, the more points you get!

What do "Perfect!", "Miss!", etc. mean?
It's an indicator of how close you were to hitting the arrow.
"PERFECT" = you hit it at exactly the right moment
"GOOD" = you were really close
"AVERAGE" = you just barely hit it
"MISS" = you didn't hit it
"BOO" = you hit an arrow that wasn't there
Perfects and Goods add to your score. Misses and Boos subtract from it.

How do I get a high score?
The biggest thing to focus on in FFR is keeping a high combo. Your combo is increased when you get Perfects, Goods, and Averages, and reset to zero when you get a Miss.

Not getting any misses in a song is called a full combo.

It also really helps your score if you're getting mostly Perfects. Try to keep close to the beat for a higher score.

Where should I put my fingers?
Do what feels natural to you. The most common play styles are:

"Four-finger": one finger on each key

"Three-finger": index and middle finger on your main hand, index finger only on the other

"Index": both index fingers covering all four keys

"One-hand": three or four fingers on one hand only

Each have their advantages and disadvantages. Try them all to feel what works best for you, and then pick one and stick with it to improve your skill. Most people agree that one-hand is the most difficult, though.

Any other advice?
Try the same song more than once - knowing what the music sounds like helps you follow the arrows better. Most of all, have fun with the game, and let us know what you think!
